NICE releases guidance on kidney disease, and conduct disorders
NICE has published two new clinical guidelines (CG) on:
- hyperphosphataemia in chronic kidney disease (CG157)
- conduct disorders in children and young people (CG158).
CG157 includes recommendations on:
- dietary management: children, young people, and adults
- phosphate binders:
- children and young people
- adults
- children, young people, and adults.
The recommendations from CG158 cover:
- general principles of care
- selective prevention
- identification and assessment
- identifying effective treatment and care options
- psychosocial interventions
- pharmacological interventions
- organisation and delivery of care.
CG158 updates and replaces NICE Technology Appraisal (TA) 102 on conduct disorders and parent-training/education programmes (2006).
NICE has also published two new TAs in March 2013 on: cystic fibrosis and the use of colistimethate sodium and tobramycin; and methylnaltrexone for opioid-induced bowel dysfunction.
News in brief – NICE has expanded its remit to officially produce evidence-based guidance and standards within the social care sector, as outlined in the Health and Social Care Act 2012
The release of quality standard 30 on dementia and quality standard 31 on the health and wellbeing of looked-after children and young people represents NICE’s first standards on social care and these have been published in conjunction with NICE’s title change to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.

News in brief – Seven new Evidence Updates have been published by NICE in the following areas:
- anaphylaxis
- caesarean section
- diabetic foot problems
- hip fracture
- multiple pregnancy
- school based interventions to prevent the uptake of smoking among children and young people
- self-harm: longer term management.
